What is Media Insiders?
Media Insiders is an ongoing research initiative by Symphony Advanced Media to help media companies better understand how consumers use, view and share TV, social, digital and mobile media. Active Media Insider Members provide important insights that help our clients make informed decisions about how they deliver content, entertainment, and information to you.

How is the research conducted?
Active Members run Media Insiders application(s) from their personal devices to capture data utilized for research. Data is currently compiled from:
  • Media Insiders Mobile (MIMobile) app measures activities conducted on a device, such as sharing, viewing, clicking, chatting, downloading and more. The app also listens for TV shows, and, using technology of Gracenote, Inc., identifies which TV shows was captured.
  • Media Insiders Connect app captures web pages visited, videos watched, and ads viewed. This information is compiled to help media companies improve their programming and advertising.
  • Facebook and/or Twitter tokens are used to understand how consumers use social media as a part of their everyday lives.
  • Surveys: Short, no screening. Media Insider Members are periodically asked to share their opinions via emailed or mobile ready surveys.
By aggregating , members’ data across the U.S., we can provide accurate insights about how media is used, viewed and shared.
At no time is a member's personally identifiable information ever shared or released publicly, nor will we ever interact with you via social media. To learn more about how we safeguard our members' information, view our Privacy Policy.



PARTICIPATION AND REWARDS

Who can become a Media Insiders Member?
A U.S. resident 13 years or older with an email address and at least one of the following devices:
Android version 4.0 or greater (not rooted): Smartphone, tablet, Amazon & Kindle Fire HD
and/or
iOS version 5.0 or greater based iPhone 5, iPad, iPad mini, and iPod touch

How do you become a Media Insider Member?
Complete the MI registration survey
Download the MIMobile app to an eligible device
Accept the Terms and Conditions and license agreements
Activate the MIMobile app with your registered email address
Done! You are now a Media Insider member!

What are the benefits to being a Media Insider Member?
Besides shaping the future of media, we show our appreciation to members by offering rewards. Rewards are earned in variety of ways shown below. The active member can choose between receiving Sweepstakes or Perks Points rewards.

How can I earn Rewards?
Become an MI member
The number of apps downloaded and continuously run per MI member
The number of qualifying devices that run the app(s) per MI member
The longevity of continuously running the apps per MI member
Referring friends that become MI members
Receiving and completing surveys

What is an MI member?
A MI member downloads and runs the MI Mobile app plus captures one (1) live TV event (national networks and/or major cable channels) during a one week period from Monday – Sunday.

What do I earn for initially becoming a member and activating the MI Mobile app on my first device?
The first time you activate the app on your first device only regardless of which reward you choose, you will receive one entry into the Grand Prize Sweepstakes. This is subject to the sweepstakes official rules.

How many apps can a member run?
A member can run two different apps. MI Mobile for mobile devices and Media Insiders Connect for personal computers.

How many devices can an MI member receive rewards for?
MI members will be rewarded for running MI Mobile on up to three mobile devices and Media Insiders Connect on one computer.
Households with more qualifying devices require additional memberships (13 years and older) to earn additional rewards.

Is there any incentive for remaining an MI member for long period of time? 
500 Points is given to MI members as a bonus award for those who remain active for 12 consecutive weeks in addition to their chosen reward.

If I choose sweepstakes as my reward for being an MI member when will I earn entries, how many entries will I earn, and how much can I win per device? 
Three (3) Sweepstake entries per active week are earned: 1 weekly (win 1 of 3 $25 Tango gift cards), 1 monthly (win 1 of 3 $100 Tango gift cards), 1 quarterly (win $10,000 Grand Prize quarterly drawing)
Chances of winning depends on the number of entries and we do not administer any of the foregoing sweepstakes. Please see the official rules for more information.

If I choose Perks Points as my reward for being an MI member how much can I earn and when will I receive my reward?
Each device that runs the MI app from Monday-Sunday for at least 5 days and captures at least one (1) television viewing will earn $1.25 in Perks Points (125 Points) each week.  For each device that also runs M-Connect (VPN) with at least 3 days of activity will earn an additional $.50 in Perks Points (50 Points) each week.  You can also earn $1.25 in Perks Points (125 Points) for running PC Connect with at least one day of activity, when a mobile device also earns their MM/TV reward.  See the activity reward schedule here.

What are Perks Points?
Perks Points can be accrued and redeemed for e-certificates, gift cards, and even Cash!  You can redeem Perks Points for merchandise from top brands like Amazon, Starbucks, CVS, TJ Maxx and Marshalls.  You can also use your Perks Points to donate to charity or for restaurants like Applebee's or IHOP.   

What is Tango Card™? 
Tango cards are given as sweepstakes prizes.  You can redeem your Tango Card for merchandise from top brands like Gap, Target, Starbucks, Home Depot, and dozens of other leading retailers. You can also donate your rewards to charity or use rewards for online game currency. Tango Cards are redeemable in stores, online or via your mobile phone. 



MI MOBILE

Will the MI Mobile application impact my smartphone or tablet performance?
MI Mobile is a small application (~3.3MB) which runs in the background of your device and is not intended to interfere with your web, app, wireless phone, or battery usage.

What do I need to do to ensure the MI Mobile is working properly?
Once installed, you should never need to re-activate, but if it ever stops running, we will notify you by e-mail. You should periodically confirm that 'Data Roaming' is checked (Android) or the "on/off" switch is turned to "on" (iOS). You are responsible, however, for all data charges on your device. MI MOBILE CONNECT (VPN)

What is MI Mobile Connect (VPN)?
MI Mobile VPN is a component of the MI Mobile App directly in Android or through OpenVPN in iOS devices. It is not intended to interfere with your web, app, wireless phone, or battery usage. Mobile Connect (VPN) details can be viewed here.  

What is MI Mobile Connect (VPN) reward?
MI Members that run the MI-Mobile 5x within a week (Monday through Sunday) with 1 TV event will receive a $.50 in Perks Points (50 Points) if Mobile VPN is also run 3x during that week.

When can I run MI Mobile Connect (VPN)?

MI Mobile Connect (VPN) becomes active on Android devices 29 days after a members first device activation.  iOS devices can run MI Mobile VPN through Open VPN sooner, however rewards will not begin until the week after the 29th day.


How does MI Mobile Connect (VPN) run?
MI Mobile Connect (VPN) on Android devices will turn on and off intermittently and it could take 20 minutes to connect after manually turning Mobile VPN on.

How do I know the MI Mobile Connect (VPN) is running?
On an Android-based device, you will see two indicators that the Media Insiders VPN is active: a small key icon on the top left of your screen and an entry in your notification pane that "VPN is activated by MI Mobile."

Can I turn off the MI Mobile Connect (VPN)?
Yes. To turn off the Media Insiders VPN for any reason while you're using your device, you can do the following:
Android: In your notification pane, tap the "VPN is activated by MI Mobile" entry. Then tap "Disconnect"
If you disconnect the VPN, it will remain off for the remainder of your session (the time the screen is on). When you turn the screen off, and come back to your device later, the Media Insiders VPN will reconnect automatically, or will ask you for permission to reconnect the VPN.

I didn't turn off the MI Mobile Connect (VPN), but I don't see the notification that the VPN is on. What happened?
The MI Mobile Connect (VPN) can turn itself off for a variety of reasons. MI Mobile tracks the strength and volatility of your data connection (how much it's changing, or connecting/reconnecting) and will shut off temporarily if it senses a weak or volatile connection to ensure your user experience isn't affected. Also, if we have high loads on our servers, we can shut down the VPN so internet speeds are not reduced. In any case, you do not have to do anything--the VPN will eventually reconnect on its own.

Why does the MI Mobile Connect (VPN) sometimes ask me for permission to start, and why sometimes does it start by itself?
On Android-based devices the operating system requires you to physically indicate that you're "OK" with using the MI Mobile Connect (VPN) under certain circumstances. It will require you to click a check box and then press "OK" the first time the MI Mobile Connect (VPN) connects after restarting the device or after you have manually disconnected the MI Mobile Connect (VPN).



IDENTIFYING TV SHOWS WATCHED

How does this technology work?
MI Mobile listens periodically to noise signals for a very short duration and converts it into encoded digital signals to create a digital "fingerprint." Gracenote technology attempts to identify which TV shows and/or ads you may have watched by matching the fingerprint code to its TV program database.
When MI Mobile is running on your device, keep it with you when you watch TV. The microphone needs to be able to listen to the TV therefore if you can hear the TV, your phone can hear the TV--even if it is in your pocket. If you leave the room, take your phone with you--we are interested only in what you, personally, are watching.

Will you know which TV shows I'm watching?
Symphony Advanced Media uses technology from Gracenote, Inc. that is designed to match the sound samples gathered by MI Mobile to a reference database of broadcast and cable TV programs. We aggregate your data with the data we collect from thousands of other MI members. We never market or sell any individual data to anyone.

How do I know if a TV event is captured?
The “View Results” button in the MI Mobile app lets you see if the digital fingerprints of the shows you've watched matched the shows in our national database. MI Mobile might not begin to identify sounds for the first 5 days of use, and during this time the "View Results" button will show a blank list. After the first 5 days, this list is cleared every few hours, so sometimes you may see a blank list.

Will MI Mobile application record my phone or other conversations around the house?
MI Mobile is designed to only identify sounds from TV programs; however, other sound samples will be recorded but unsuccessfully matched to Gracenote. Please review our privacy policy for more information.

Can I use the phone or other apps while the MI Mobile is listening to the TV?
Yes, absolutely! Please use your phone as you normally would.



MEDIA INSIDERS PC-CONNECT

What is Media Insiders PC-Connect app?
Media Insiders PC-Connect is a PC (or Mac) version of MI Mobile. It allows Media Insiders to understand what web pages you visit, videos you watch, and ads you see.

How do I download Media Insiders PC-Connect?
At the present time, Mobile Insiders PC-Connect is being rolled out to MI members on a weekly basis via email invitation. Check your inbox for your invitation. If you have yet to receive an invitation and you have been an MI member for over 3 weeks, please contact our support team (support@mediainsiderspanel.com) to receive a link to download Media Insiders PC-Connect on your personal computer or laptop.

Do I receive a reward for running Media Insiders PC-Connect?
Yes! After downloading, activating and running Media Insiders PC-Connect on your computer for one (1) week, you will receive a $1.25 in Perks Points (125 Points). See Participation and Rewards for more information.

How will it affect my home computer?
Media Insiders PC-Connect will set up a VPN connection from your computer. You will see our icon in your notification tray, so you’ll know it’s there. Other than that, it runs completely in the background, using very little system resources, and should be essentially unnoticeable.

Will I need to login and off every time I open or close my computer?
Nope! The Media Insiders PC-Connect will turn itself on when you turn on the computer. If you manually turn the app off, for example to run a different VPN for gaming, you will need to manually reconnect once you’re done.

How do I know it is running?
When Media Insiders PC-Connect is installed, a small orange icon in your notification tray (Mac) or system tray (PC). When the application is connected, the icon will have a small green dot inside the icon. If the application is disconnected, the icon will have a small “x” in place of the green dot.

I already use a VPN for work on my computer. Can I use yours too?
Yes! However, you can only have one VPN active on your computer at a time. If you need to use your work VPN, be sure to disconnect the Media Insiders PC-Connect application first. And, don’t forget to reconnect it when you’re done working!

How do I disconnect Media Insiders Connect?
Simply “right click” on the icon, located either in the notification tray (Mac) or system tray (PC). Click on the option to “disconnect vpn.mediainsiderspanel.com”. When you are ready to reconnect the application, right click again and click on the option to “connect to vpn.mediainsiderspanel.com.”

MEDIA INSIDERS VPN

What is a VPN connection?
A VPN, or "Virtual Private Network," allows Media Insiders to keep track of websites, ads, and videos downloaded or streamed. We do this by sending your Internet traffic through our servers before it goes to its final destination. VPN is used for both MI Mobile Connect and Media Insiders PC-Connect apps.

Does the Media Insiders VPN slow down my Internet?
Our company is founded on ensuring the most effortless and seamless user experience for our panelists. We have invested time, research and money to ensure that our VPN technology does not slow down your Internet access or your device. We have established very high-speed connections. If you have a high-speed device (HSPA, LTE, WiFi) you will continue to enjoy the speed you pay for!

What information are you collecting through the VPN?
We collect all information that is not encrypted, including websites, ads, searches, and downloaded or streamed files and videos.
We do NOT, however, see any information that is encrypted. Traffic that is encrypted are typically web pages where you might purchase something, and use your credit card. We don't track or capture any of that information.

I already have a VPN running on my device. Will I be able to access your VPN?
Unfortunately, each mobile device can only run one VPN at a time. If you need to run a corporate VPN, for example, you'll need to shut the Media Insiders VPN down first, and once you've logged off the corporate VPN, our VPN will restart itself. 



SOCIAL MEDIA 

Why do you want to see my activity on Facebook and Twitter?
If you have a Facebook or Twitter account, we ask you to sync these accounts with Media Insiders so we can better understand how social media is used in everyday life. Media Insiders uses Facebook to connect with our members and send out periodic updates of new member benefits and interesting research results. At no time will we ever post on your wall, comment or otherwise interact with you publicly or privately via Facebook or Twitter. Your personal information is never shared or released publicly.

UNSUBSCRIBE

How do I unsubscribe from Media Insiders or cancel my membership?
We appreciate you being a Media Insider and encourage you to remain a member. However, if you would like to unsubscribe at any time, you may do so by editing your profile and following the de-activation instructions for iOS and Android. To edit your profile, click on the "Update User Info" link from any page once you have logged onto www.mediainsiderspanel.com as a member. You may also, choose UNSUBSCRIBE in any email we send or contact Customer Support at support@mediainsiderspanel.com and request to be removed.

What happens to my rewards if I unsubscribe and am no longer a Media Insider Member?
When you discontinue your Media Insider Membership, you will no longer reap future benefits associated with membership.
All Perks Points balances will be yours to redeem as long as they reach the minimum required threshold of 500 Points. Any balances below that threshold will be lost, and you will not have the ability to earn additional Perks Points.
All deposits already made into your Tango Card account are yours to keep or spend at your convenience. However, you will no longer earn any additional Tango Card rewards.
All sweepstakes entries received prior will count towards the next monthly and/or quarterly drawing. However, you will no longer earn any additional monthly or quarterly sweepstakes.

How do I update or change my Media Insiders profile?
Once registered as a Media Insider member, you may update or modify your profile at any time by clicking on the "Update User Info" link from any page once you have logged onto www.mediainsiderspanel.com as a member.
If you are going to be away on vacation or out of the country, and will not be able to participate during this time, please let us know by contacting support@mediainsiderspanel.com . We will be sure to keep you as an active member during your time away.

How will you communicate with me?
We will contact you by email or phone. Please keep your contact information up to date in your profile. Either click on the "Update User Info" link from any page once you have successfully logged onto http://www.mediainsiders.com/ as a member or contact Customer Support at support@mediainsiderspanel.com .
Please note: If, as a new member, you do not receive an e-mail message from us stating that your app is working, please check your "junk" or "spam" folders and then adjust your settings.

How do I change my password?
When you register directly with us, you are required to enter a password. You can always change your password at any time by editing your profile. To edit your profile, click on the "Update User Info" link from any page once you have successfully logged onto www.mediainsiders.com as a member.

I lost my password. Is there a way to retrieve it?
If you can't remember your password, click on the "Forgot Password" next to the member login, and follow the instructions.
